Integrated Fire Alarm Systems to Meet British Standards at Eastbourne Nursing Home

Avalon Nursing Home is a well established and highly regarded care home in Eastbourne. It has recently been extended to create a specialist EMI wing which has 12 bedroom suites and the original building has 21 bedrooms.

The requirement from the local fire authority was for the fire detection system to give coverage to meet compliance to BS5839 2002 L1. After the extension was completed in 2009 the fire alarm systems for the buildings consisted of 2 separate fire alarm panels which were not interlinked, so effectively individual separate systems. Neither the old existing system or the new system installed in the extension had detection coverage to L1.

The Vicom Solution

Vicom were asked to design a solution to bring the two separate systems in line with British Standards. The design was completed, a scope of works was developed and a proposal submitted. This included replacing all the old devices within the old building, and installing new smoke detectors with integrated sounders. This ensured audibility levels complied with BS5839 and to standardize equipment throughout the whole building.

The fire alarm panel in the older building was replaced with the same fire panel /product that was installed in the new building. This again standardised the equipment. The two systems are linked and communicate so in the event of activation of either system, the two fire alarm panels go into alarm so that both the original building and the extension can be evacuated simultaneously. Also, all of the sounders throughout whole building can be silenced by either panel.

Vicom designed, supplied, installed and commissioned all devices throughout the Avalon Nursing Home to ensure that the system met L1 Compliance. New user instructions and zone charts were produced and issued and we carried out staff training on new system.
